12:13 am - Wow hi
Hello friends, if I'm still appearing on your list and you still check your friends page.

This is a momentous occasion because I'm actually writing in my LJ and I haven't moved since my last post. Yes, that's how much I care. Haven't been great at keeping you all up to date on life, but yeah, we all have to fail at something. Let's see where we left off...

The new place: I still live there. It's fine. It's still a mess.

MAGFest: Last we left off I was preparing for MAGFest 8, which was a big success, and MAGFest 9 even more so. This past event we maxed out the hotel at the fire code and had to cap 3000 attendees, all which registered ahead of time. We're moving to a new, larger venue.

I recently took a pretty big step back from MAGFest, though. Too much stress was actually causing some health problems for me. Anyway, I'm still on the paperwork and still helping out in most places, but for the most part, I am no longer That Guy (that is, I pretty much direct people to others).

After 6 (or is it 7?) years of joking about it, by the way, we're going to do the MAGFest camping event and call it MAGStock CampFest. There's an event on facebook for it. No site yet. It'll be in VA.

Part Time Job: So, that was fun. I actually had a very awesome, flexible environment with terrific people in charge. There were a few occasional office politics and other stupid things but what office doesn't have a little bit of personality? Anyway, due to cutbacks I lost the job a month or so ago. But that leads me to the next (pretty important) point....

Music: Losing my job kind of gave me the kick in the pants to work on music a lot more. Since my last post I got serious about setting up a place to sell my music and let people download it, so now you can pick up chiptunes (like that Guilty Gear EP) and also a second CD that I released about a year later, all at inversephase.bandcamp.com. I don't want to come back to LJ begging for your money, so just share it and listen to it. You can listen to the entire bandcamp for free without paying or downloading anything, and if you like my music, I do appreciate any and all support.

New album: Yeah, file this under music if you want, but I'm working on a new album. It's an entire parody cover of one album, by one artist, and I think everyone will like it quite a bit. I expect big things might happen with this one. I got written up in Wired for my last major release when I did a cover/parody of Cee Lo's "F**k You". I'm currently working on finishing off the tracks, the covers, and getting the second half of my permissions to release it.

Vidja gaymz: After I played FF1, I finished Phantasy Star 1 on the SMS. I played a Japanese translation because it had lovely FM sound and apparently this one was translated better than the original or something. To be perfectly honest I haven't really had a lot of time to play other games, I still have an ongoing game of Phantasy Star 2 I'm neglecting due to aforementioned album. I've been collecting a lot of old systems and rebuilding some of the collection that was lost when things got stolen at previous MAGFests. It'd be neat to start a museum.

Other random stuff, I still love watching HD scifi on the projector, I'm still cool with riding the bus, and I'm thankful for anyone local that still hangs out with me. I'd love to keep in touch on facebook. I even use (ack, gag) twitter, and sometimes even enjoy it, but use it primarily as an outlet for music promotion and fart jokes.

8:41 pm - FIRST POST@#$%! (in like 3 years, that is)
Holy crap. I haven't posted in so long. Let's see what the biggest things going on are before I whore myself out and ask you if you want to buy my first album.

- I moved. Again. Still in C'ville. I have a pretty sweet basement all to myself which doubles as MAGFest storage unit. It even has a minibar that I recently alleviated of storage duties (that's right, it's already kind of a mess here) so I can make drinks at it.
- I got a part time job as a database operator, and I will be doing a little programming work on the side for them with my pal and coworker Trey. He's a random dude I met from #vorbis of all places and we hang out and do TV and movies all the time. The job is actually flexible and pays reasonably. They are totally cool with me taking off for whatever reason.
- I'm still doing MAGFest and it'll be the 8th event this upcoming year. If you're able to get to the DC area on or after New Year's, join me, it's awesome. Duke Nukem is going to be there this year. Also I run a radio stream at the top of its site
- I finally released a CD. It's more of an EP but it's a whole bunch of Nintendo "retrocovers" (a composer I know also calls them "demakes") of Guilty Gear songs (which if you're not familiar, were originally metal). Remember the posts I did awhile back with NES music I was working on? Yeah, this is that. I got them listed on VGMdb here and I'm selling it on my own site here if anyone wants to support (thanks in advance if you do). There will be more of this if I get enough interest.
- I'm still licensed but I've pretty much sworn off my own vehicle for awhile and I'm doing the local pubtrans + carpool thing and loving it.
- I confess, I never played enough FF to beat a game and I finally powered through FF1. Played it translated on the wonderswan.
- Not that I wasn't watching scifi shows etc in HD before most people I know, but oh man, it's serious.

FSOL - Lifeforms as replacement for Metroid Prime OST.

MAGFest is in like 2 weeks and our website is down because a bunch of Seattle is without power. Sucks. Hope Gabriel and Liss and the kids are doing ok and not freezing their asses off.

Radio interview tonight:

So many facebook promotions lately, and I've had lunch twice at Limeleaf Thai, this new place here in town. Really good pad thai.

If you're in the C'ville area, go to the Gamers Fall Festival on Friday.

Here's a nintendo-on-top-of-prog-metal thing I've been working on:

7:52 pm - Lots of stuff going on lately
Got free food at Qdoba monday because of a freak incident with the register. That rocked.

We've recently gotten some new guests for MAGFest, most notably OverClocked ReMix. And we've been planning a bunch of stuff. I'll be in Philly and State College this weekend, see the MAGFest website for details.

The SPCA rummage sale is going on here in Charlottesville, and I picked up a ton of useful stuff.

We emptied the storage room with the exception of Mt. Monitor and now Matt lives in there. The rest of the stuff is currently strewn about the house, and I'm trying to figure out how to further consolidate what I have into less tubs. Roope is already moving the stuff to the storage unit as we speak. In the meantime I'm also trying to clean my own room and reorganize to fit more things. The CD shelf got moved onto a table behind a computer, megaplex got moved to the table that it was in front of (which involved running internal SCSI cables from the CD tower behind the table to the computer on top of it, it just barely fit), and the general mess is being tidied so I can vacuum.

Speaking of Mt. Monitor, my 21" Trinitron recently started freaking out. This marks the 4th year now that I've had it, I think, and it's served me extremely well. The picture pincushions in and vibrates vertically. I'll probably look for a way to fix it, because it's probably simple; I'm using a 19" backup Trinitron (that one in the middle) and I have another 21" in the meantime I picked up from the SPCA sale (but it's gaussed to the point where the internal degausser won't fix it, so I need to get over to the TV shop. I dropped this 19" on my head while pulling it off the shelf. Ouch. Not recommended.

I'm getting busy again, more updates later.

11:44 am - otaweekend2006

This weekend was pretty crazy. Lots of things happened. Some good, some bad. Most things concerning Otakon were good, I suppose. I'm way tired so you're getting vitals only at present

Thursday: reasonably drama-free
- good: went to a show at the talking head with shawn
- good: finished the costume above
- good: helped shawn work on a cover
- meh: no sleep

Friday: day of ugh
- bad: shawn (and everyone else by proxy) found out his girlfriend died
- bad: baber found out his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend died
- bad: baber's car got illegally towed by the city of baltimore
- good: ate food
- good: went to chromelodeon/entsys/geist concert near otakon.
- bad: had to harass someone at 4am to pick me up from BCC.
- good: managed to give out half of my flyers
- good: got sleep

- good: got into otakon, if a bit late
- bad: forgot I left badge in someone's car, no badge for rest of otakon
- good: got good convention-going hangout time in
- meh: got harassed by spec ops because of the "no sign policy"
- good: they only required some of my text be removed and helped costume remain intact
- good: got some systems from russ! (thanks russ)
- meh: walking to shawnphase's place from BCC longer than expected
- good: got more sleep

- bad: didn't actually get to say hi to shawn before I left
- good: metro was free (no charge for boxes?)
- bad: left camera charger/battery, cell charger at his place by accident
- good: ate food (sauce-stuffed crust!)
- good: made it out of baltimore and still managed to hang out with eric, nick
- bad: didn't have time to stop by dj potatoe's

the ups and downs to being a controller are as follows:

- good: everyone wants to "press your buttons" (including lewd comment)
- bad: most of them are dudes

- good: hundreds of people want to enter a code
- bad: not all of them enter it gently (some of them "punch" it in)

- good: lots of people recognised the outfit and thought it was the coolest thing they'd ever seen
- bad: some people still argued B and A were reversed and asked where the L and R buttons were

- good: anyone that stops a nintendo controller is flyer-worthy and I gave out almost all 2000
- bad: kinkos way overcharged us

Anyway, it's time to click the button.

2:40 pm - find me at otakon
okay kids, I'm just about to leave for otakon.

really, it should not be terribly difficult for you to locate me there. just look for a life size nintendo controller walking around. or get in touch, which leads me to my next point.

I have this fantastic device called a sidekick. I had one before, but then I didn't, and now I have one back. this entire weekend please feel free to call me or send a message on aim/yahoo messenger: cellgreenzebra

I seriously have a real aim and a real yahoo account at home. and it is always online. and when I'm not at conventions or something, I am almost always home. so please, go wild this weekend, but message me at home the rest of the time.

anyway, if you want my digits, there's a good chance you haven't left for otakon, so you can also message my phone and I'll get you my number. I have unlimited text messages and that will be a good way to get in touch because otakon is NOISY and BUSY and there's little chance when you call me that I'll be able to hear you unless you're willing to wait for me to go to a quiet area.

hope to see you there, or have fun if I don't catch you!

11:35 pm - RIP Ben Bandan, but please stop calling me to tell me the news
First of all, if you're not aware for some reason (this would come as a complete shocker to yours truly, who's phone has been ringing off the hook about it), my dear confriend and MAGFest Security Guy, Ben Bandan, passed away the other night, but not without passing 15 floors of an apartment building and at least part of a BMW the other night.

details and some URLs to news and stuff

I am not yet sure if I'm able to attend the funeral being put on but despite how deadpan I am on the phone and AIM I have a myriad of feelings about the situation.

Simply explained, it's hard to be animate at all because for the last week I have been battling tonsilitis and unable to swallow. Five days passed without me being able to even so much as eat, and even forcing down water is painful when your throat is swollen shut. Hospital visit somewhere in there.

I heard a lot of interesting things about Ben ("emo blogs", "drug experimentation", "suicide note") and you know what? Everyone's trying to put together why it happened and everything. I hate to be the voice of reason here, but seriously guys, if he's gone, you should let it go, figuring out his death will probably not bring much closure to the situation, it's still a suicide, it still fucking sucks, and no amount of work put into this is going to bring your friend back to life. How about you kids remember him for what he was, a cool, funny, entertaining guy.

I think he would be happier remembered or thought of in this light rather than this way. I know someone is going to be utterly disgusted at the spamusement post so I'm going to tell you right now to stop reaching for the comments button and think about it. Ben was a funny guy, if you were hanging out right now, would he be saying something that makes you glad you're his friend or punching you in the face and making you cry?

To top all of this tonsilitis and Ben drama off, we lost internet access here at the house for the last like WEEK because our nextdoor neighbors moved out and had their cable cut off, and the cable guy that came to disconnect it disconnected OURS instead. So I haven't been able to get virtually anything done this week, which means "lay in bed all day trying to force water/antibiotics/whatever down."

And I still have so much ELSE to do.

My uncle and two cousins from Lexington, and my dad (not from Lex) have both been in town over the course of the last few days. It's been really nice to hang out with them. My cousin's all well adjusted and turning into a cool dude. Fun hijinks have included listening to DRAGONFORCE (he asked me if I was into them, he's getting into drama/prog metal, totally awesome), and showing him and his french friend/exchangestudent the Virt M4 Panel Video which has a priceless section of french that caught some laughs.

There's another new MAGFest cafepress. It's only got a shirt but more soon probably. If you didn't see the first one I still really dig that other logo too. The MAGFest concert is almost ready to be uploaded to me, too, so those DVDs might be going out soon.

I ran a shelob the other night. I guess actually a week ago. Shelob is a one-hour "competition" with no winner. Basically you have an hour to write anything that even remotely resembles music with a specific set of instruments. Skill level doesn't matter. Then, afterwards, everyone listens to each of the tunes at the same time, possibly drunk, and chats about them as they play, mocking them or otherwise giggling about whatever funny thing someone did in their song. It's great fun and a good way to get inspiration or just to have fun for a few hours and meet some cool musicians.

Resulting tunes (something that plays MOD/XM/IT is required!):

I got really annoyed, by the way, that there are tons of Gameboy and NES samplepacks but nothing terribly useful for writing Commodore64 music. After a few hours of rendering, I created my own and wrote a quick sample tune with it. It's no substitute for a real SID / 6581, but maybe someone will find this amusing:

So, the last piece of big news. Thanks to my loving dad, who is now blinging his hiphop self with a new sidekick 3, I have a sidekick again, and it's a sidekick 2 now. You will see cellgreenzebra on AIM a lot. RESIST THE URGE TO SEND A MESSAGE TO IT before trying me at home. "Cell" means "Cell phone" means "this is not my home AIM name". I'll also set up a yahoo account specifically for the phone since it has Y!M whenever the hell I get around to it and don't have a million other things to do.

Hello world.

2:14 am - 1.5 psp on ebay
So a few people have asked me where they can get a PSP with version 1.5 firmware and now I have an answer.

It's priced a bit high but for a 1.5, show some love. I know the seller.

3:47 am - all these away messages, only one actual meaning
If I could bust into people's computers and change their away messages, it would probably go something like this:

"zzz" -> "sleeping (playing wow)"
"dinner" -> "ignoring my food (playing wow)"
"class" -> "playing wow in class"
"work" -> "called in sick for work, playing wow instead"
"errand" -> "raid in wow"

8:43 pm - fun times
My right butt cheek has a muscle spasm. I just thought I'd tell the world.

Also I hit King's Dominion yesterday, this trip was sponsored by mom and the gang. It was a blast, sadly the Volcano was having issues towards the end of the night and we didn't quite make it on for a second ride. I did however get videos on and a few others.

Also fixed up a new computer for the family while they were up here. Hopefully it does well.

10:20 pm - cdevour 1.01 released
Yep, there's a new cdevour. The changelog is:
- Moving rips now enabled by default
- Data tracks now taken into account when moving rips
- Removed iterated "..." when waiting for riplock
- Copy cd*txt instead of moving to check info by discid
- Verbosity from mv/cp removed, but added it to moverips

Helped Jer move in today. He and Meg (they're married), friends of Emily's, are moving into Patrick's old room. They seem like a good bunch, Jer will probably turn into like 2-4x the nerd he was before moving in, and Meg, well, we'll work on her. ;)

I located a few more CDs (and some dvd duplicates) I'd rather unload to people on LJ and to good homes that aren't this one:

They Might Be Giants - Flood
La Bouche - Sweet Dreams (album)
Smash Mouth - Astro Lounge
DHT - Listen to your Heart (album)
BT - Emotional Technology

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Wrongfully Accused

10:00 am - Still going through boxes
As I mentioned yesterday, I'm poor and selling CDs but want to get a little more than I'd get from plan9. I found a few more and would be happier to see them go to a nice home before plan9, so, here's another list. I will be taking yesterday's list there today. These will most likely go tomorrow or the next time I get down to the corner.

2 Unlimited - Sin Limites (spanish single, it does not have "No Limits" on it despite the title)
2 Unlimited - No Limits
2 Unlimited - Get Ready
Apollo 440 - Electro Glide in Blue
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (has scratch towards end)
Electric Skychurch - Knowoneness
Planet Soul - Energy + Harmony
U2 - Joshua Tree
U2 - Pop
U2 - Achtung Baby

2:03 pm - Getting Poor
I'm probably going to take a bunch of CDs to Plan9 later to sell them if no one wants these. Some of these are kind of "beloved" albums, or at least, discs that hold value (in various ways) to me, but I can always get another copy. Plan9 usually gives around 3-4 bucks from what I've seen, so something around there would be nice. They all play/rip without issues, I've just checked.

IM or comment if you want any, but do it by like 6pm. I know, 4 hour window sucks, not many people read my journal, but the forums I post on are down, so this is my official linking spot.

Roni Size / Reprazent - New Forms (2 discs)
Nine Inch Nails - Further Down The Spiral (US, black disc)
Enigma - MCMXC AD
Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses
VNV Nation - Empires (immaculate disc, business card still in case)
Soul Oddity - Tone Capsule
Headrillaz - Coldharbour Rocks
Information Society - Hack
Moby - I Like To Score (promo)
Garbage - Version 2.0
Audio Adrenaline - Bloom
TLC - Crazy Sexy Cool
Weezer - Blue
Cranberries - Doors and Windows (enhanced)
Gillette - On The Attack (skips but rips)
Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
Steve Taylor - Squint (promo)
Johnny Mnemonic OST (ripped slowly, plays ok)
Underworld- Live: Everything, Everything

9:27 am - stop asking me why I hate OSX
First Apple was all like "Macs are faster than PCs!" or at least their users were.

Then Apple changed the architecture. Seriously. A Dell Inspiron is the same thing as a MacBook, essentially. And Apple is all like "ooh, look, our computers are 2-4 times as fast now!" after pimping how much better the old architecture was.

Then Apple releases this slew of commercials that are completely stupid. "I'm a Mac." "I'm a PC." Bullshit, you're the same hardware and a different OS. Why Apple doesn't say "I'm MacOS" and "I'm Windows" is beyond me, aside from maybe their worry of a lawsuit from MS. By the way, I have a PC, and none of those silly problems they keep talking about, not to mention the entire Macs restarting thing is hilarious and stupid.

Speaking of, there's also that stupid iPod patent lawsuit that Apple is sicking on Creative. Now, everyone knows I hate iPods, and maybe with a product page as confusing as this, they deserve it, but I heard Creative is actually supporting Vorbis these days in some capacity, so, it's a real pity.

And now Apple closed the kernel. I guess they really did just want to abuse a few open source programmers, get what they needed, and pull out of the game after all. My fears were not unfounded.

OSX is dead to me now, and I am done with Apple.
